Woodend Playgroup Diversity & Inclusion Policy

At Woodend Playgroup, we believe that all children and families deserve to feel safe, respected, and valued—just as they are. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where diversity is not only accepted but celebrated.

Raising Respectful Little Humans Starts With Us
Children learn through observation. What they see at home becomes their blueprint for life. If we model equality, kindness, and mutual respect, our children will grow up with these same values. If we speak kindly to our partners, show empathy, and resolve conflict without shouting or name-calling, our children will reflect those behaviours in their own relationships—now and in the future.

Challenging Stereotypes Early
At Woodend Playgroup, we encourage families to actively question and challenge gender stereotypes. Why shouldn’t boys love pink? Why shouldn’t girls be fascinated by trucks or tools? A critical eye helps children develop into open-minded individuals who are not boxed in by outdated societal norms.

Equality Begins at Home
We believe gender equality in the home leads to healthier and safer relationships. Children should see all caregivers sharing in decision-making, parenting duties, and financial conversations. Whether a parent is currently in a paid role or not, their voice matters.

It’s okay for each parent to parent differently—as long as love and respect are constant, variety in style enriches a child’s life.

Words Matter: Defending and Educating
When someone says, “Boys shouldn’t cry” or “You look like a girl,” we believe it’s important to respond calmly and confidently. You don’t need to argue—just say, “We don’t believe in that stuff.” Let your child know they’re perfect as they are.

Let’s:

Avoid labels like tomboy or too emotional—they limit potential.

Encourage both girls to take safe risks and boys to express vulnerability.

Correct unhelpful or outdated assumptions with compassion and clarity.

Your Family. Your Values. Our Support.
Every family is different—and you are the expert when it comes to your child. At Woodend Playgroup, we are here to support you in raising kind, inclusive, emotionally intelligent young people.

Let’s enjoy this journey together, and create a community where everyone belongs.

Woodend Playgroup acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, the Dja Dja Wurrung people, on which our Playgroup is located. We respect that this land always was and always will be Aboriginal land. Aboriginal sovereignty has never been ceded.

We pay our respect to Elders past and present, as well as all Aboriginal people who have fought, and continue to fight, for equality, self-determination, culture, Country and community.
